Can you solve these riddles?

1. A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, "You may make a statement. If it is true, I'll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I'll sentence you to six years in prison." After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say?

2. You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container?

3. Mom and Dad have four daughters, and each daughter has one brother. How many people are in the family?

This one is especially for Helena:

4. What English word retains the same pronunciation, even after you take away four of its five letters?

5. If your sock drawer has 6 black socks, 4 brown socks, 8 white socks, and 2 tan socks, how many socks would you have to pull out in the dark to be sure you had a matching pair?

Good Luck!

Biiilllll, please stop making me think so early in the morning. I hate riddles because I stink at them. I can't answer any of these! I hope you give us the answers soon.

#1 I don't really know but maybe He said "I'm innocent"
#2 fill the 3 gallon and pour in the five then refill the 3 and you have one gallon left.
#3 sounds like 10 but sounds like a trick.
#4 I have no idea
#5 is 5 socks.

How did I do?

Bridget,
Good work! You are correct on #2 and #5. Keep trying!

Anybody else?

Ok #1 he said he was his son. SO he let him go.... or maybe he said he was sorry? I don't know really I am pretty much just going to keep guessing.
#3 I have no Idea.
#4 I have no Idea either what does Helena say?

Bridget,

Thank you for playing. So far, no one has even attempted these except you. As for Helena, she has had limited access to the internet, but between you and me, she is afraid! As far as # 1, the answer is within the question.

1. He either said, “You will sentence me to 6 years” because if the judge did, then he would make a false statement true, or “ You will sentence me to 4 years” because then he would make the true statement false.

2. Measure 3 gallons, pour it into the 5 gallon container. Measure 3 more gallons, pour it into the 5 gallon container and you will eliminate 2 gallons. The remaining oil in the 3 gallon container will be the desired 1 gallon. (This was in Die Hard with a Vengeance)

3. It depends on what “each” means. If each daughter has one brother to call her own then there would be 8 kids +2 parents which means they are a family of 10. But, if the daughters all share one brother then maybe there are only 5 kids + 2 parents and they are a family of 7.

4. Queue, but that is dumb because “Q” could never be a word. Every word needs a vowel so “q” is not a word on its own. Plus, a ‘q’ can’t even stand alone because in English it is always followed by a ‘u’, so this is double dumb. So, a word like “owe” could be reduced to “o” and still maintain its pronunciation because an ‘o’ standing alone would say “oe”, and it could be a word because ‘o’ is a vowel. “Aye” could be reduced to “a” and still say the same thing although some people would pronounce it “uh” or “a” like in “hat”. If “igh” were a word it would be pronounced the same as “I” so no worries. But again, consonant letters can not stand alone so “Q” is just dumb.

5. 5 socks. There are 4 different colors, so by pulling out 5 socks you are assured that at least 2 of them will match.

O.K., here are the answers:

#1 He said, "You'll sentence me to six years in prison." If it was true, then the judge would have to make it false by sentencing him to four years. If it was false, then he would have to give him six years, which would make it true. Rather than contradict his own word, the judge set the man free.

#2 Fill the 3-gallon container with oil and pour it into the 5-gallon container. Then fill the 3-gallon container again and use it to fill the 5-gallon container the rest of the way. One gallon will be left in the 3-gallon container.

#3 Seven. The four daughters have only one brother, making five children, plus mom and dad.

#4 Queue.

#5 Five. There are only four colors, so five socks guarantee that two will be the same color.

Marie was the first one correct with #2 and # 5. Helena was correct with all of them, she gets credit for #'s 1,3 and 4. # 4 is not dumb, " retains the same pronunciation", doesn't refer to it still being a word.

Thank you all for playing!

What the heck? I don't even see Marie's answers and Bridget got 2 and 5 right as well. Why don't I get credit, I told you I didn't look at anyone's comments before I solved them. Who made you judge and jury? I'm innocent I tell you! Sentence me to 6 years!

Queue is dumb, end of story.

I stand corrected, Marie, was not first, she did not even answer them. Bridget was first to correctly answer 2 and 5. First to answer is first to answer, you were not first! No excuses! And Queue was not dumb! There are no dumb questions.... And as for who made me judge and jury? The title of the blog is "Bill the Great!!!"
